معرفی کتاب لی لا از نگاه کاربران
I was having a discussion with a friend who had read, not this book, but Marilynne Robinsons Housekeeping, and we were going back and forth over the difficulty of expressing how powerful these books are to people who havent read them. How do I explain prose that is, on the surface, so plain and simple, and yet, with the accumulated weight of the three connected Gilead books, can move me to tears with a line?

I think Home is still my favourite. But this one makes me feel alive in a different kind of way.

Disappointed. If this books wins Man Booker Prize I will lose faith in humanity.

No one has a better mastery of the English language than Marilynne Robinson. Nor am I aware of a currently living fiction writer who knows the bible as thoroughly as she does.

Lila is the wife of Reverend John Amos, the main character of Gilead, the first of the three books that is placed in Giliad. Lila is much younger that the Reverend. He falls in love with her on first sight.

This book, through Lilas flashbacks, tells us about her life before she came to Gilead. The book also tells us about how Lila struggles with her desire to run and her desire to stay in Gilead. Lila has had a very tough life but not one without love and values. She has, however, never been exposed to anyone like the Reverend.

This book is not full of action or happenings. Rather it is Lila pondering on the meaning of the sermons she hears the Reverend give and of the books of the Bible she is reading. Her @Bible study@ starts with Ezekial and moves to Job. The Reverend tells her she has picked difficult ones, but Lila understands these books - she can relate to them.

The overall topic of Lilas musings is existence - what it is and what it means.

The book is poignant but lovely. It is by no means preachy but filled with insights on existence.

Exquisite. Sublime. Captivating. In other words I loved it. Very gently the author portrays the life, heart and soul of its main character, Lila. She had a hard life as a drifter. Even though she did not have a permanent home, nice clothes, or even food many times, she was happy and had love. She found joy in sunshine, breezes, streams and with no concept of religion or laws, she was smart thinking through questions that puzzle mankind. She said, @The best things that happen Id never have thought to pray for. In a million years. The worst things just come like the weather. You do what you can.@

Beautifully written, this is a book to savor each and every word.

Thank you Jill and Angela.
